06His storyFrom a coma at eleven to Buckingham Palace: the long way round.About Toby
From Plymouth to the world
Built local. Felt global.
Twelve countries on three continents, all from a hometown hall in Plymouth. In his words: “We didn't chase global. We built local so deeply that the world took notice.” Tap a place.
The story
From that boy to this stage.
Told he would
be nothing
A Roma child singled out by his teachers, his schoolwork torn up in front of the class. At eleven, skinheads beat him into a coma.
“Don't you try and embarrass the Polish kids.”His teacher, tearing up his work

A refugee
with a promise
His family fled to Britain with nothing: homeless, penniless, no English. He promised himself he would become the person he needed when he had nobody.

Street
Factory
With his wife Jo he founded Street Factory, using hip hop to reach the young people others had written off: care leavers, deaf children, pupils on the edge of exclusion.

Appointed
MBE
Named in the 2018 New Year Honours for his work with young people. He went to the Palace in trainers.

That Boy at the
European Parliament
His filmed conversation with a former neo-Nazi premiered at the European Parliament during Roma Week, then won the Audience Choice Award in Berlin.

The world
stage
TEDx in Warsaw and Worthing, a keynote in Dubai, Ambassador of Empowerment for the World Roma Federation, and TEDxAURAK next.

The system
